Lot description:

Trajan Æ28 of Hierocaesarea, Lydia. AD 98-117. Ti. Julius Ferox (Proconsul). ΑΥ Ν[Є]ΡΒΑΝ ΤΡΑΙΑΝΟΝ, laureate head right / ΠЄPOK HΙЄΡΟΚΑΙСΑΡЄѠΝ(sic), Artemis Persica, wearing short chiton and boots, standing right, drawing arrow from quiver with her right hand, holding bow in left, stag at feet. Apparently unique and unpublished, cf. RPC III, 1845 for similar type. 12.92g, 28mm, 2h.

Very Fine; some cleaning marks in fields.

From a private Swiss collection.

This is apparently an unpublished denomination which bears a resemblance to RPC 1845, however it also includes in the reverse legend the name of the proconsul Ferox who is named on RPC 1486ff. Therefore it is possible that this proconsul appeared on coins earlier in Trajan's reign than previously thought, as this coin links him name with the earlier style.

Estimate: 100 GBP
